Scanning Electron Micrograph
A grayscale close-up image made by scanning a focused electron beam across a specimen. Commercial instruments appeared in the mid-1960s, revealing pollen, insects and fibers in sharp, sculptural detail.

Spot it
- 01Monochrome metallic surface
- 02Extreme depth of field
- 03Glowing edge highlights
Why it happens
Electrons knocked from the sample surface are collected pixel by pixel; edges and slopes release more of them, so topography appears bright and shaded in three-dimensional relief.

Image edit prompt“Render this image as a scanning electron micrograph: the subject appears as a monochrome gray microscopic surface with extreme depth of field, bright glowing edges, dark deep crevices, fine granular detail and faint scan noise, a black background and no color. Keep the original subject and composition.”
