Sand Animation
Frame-by-frame animation made by pushing and sculpting sand on a backlit surface. Caroline Leaf pioneered the form in the late 1960s, filming her fingers shaping scenes that continually transform.

- 02Fingertip-drawn lines
- 03Fluid morphing shapes
Why it happens
Light from beneath shines through thin and thick layers of sand, so thin areas glow bright, thick areas stay dark and each fingertip stroke changes the picture in the next frame.

Image-to-video prompt“Animate this image as sand animation: the picture is formed of backlit amber sand on a glass table, and over six seconds fingertip strokes smear and reshape the grains so the shapes slowly morph and flow, glowing thin areas against dark thick ridges, tiny grain flicker. Start from the original subject and composition.”
