Patch Tokenization Grid
Vision transformers, introduced by Dosovitskiy and colleagues in 2020, cut an image into a grid of square patches that act as tokens. Visualizing the patches reveals the unit by which such models see.

Spot it
- 01Square patch grid
- 02Separated tiled cells
- 03Numbered token blocks
Why it happens
The image is divided into equal non-overlapping squares, each flattened into a vector and linearly projected, so the picture becomes a sequence of tokens with position labels.

Image edit prompt“Show this image divided into a visible grid of 16 by 16 square patches: thin gaps and bright outlines between tiles, each patch slightly separated like a token, small index numbers in the corners, clean technical diagram feel. Keep the original subject and composition.”
