Lantern Slide
Photographs printed on glass for the magic lantern, popular from the 1850s, brought travel, science and art to lecture halls. Many were later tinted by hand, glowing when projected onto a screen.

Why it happens
A transparent photographic positive on glass is lit from behind and focused by a lens, so light passes through the image and projects an enlarged, luminous picture on a screen.
