Harmonograph
A mechanical drawing device from the mid-nineteenth century, associated with Scottish mathematician Hugh Blackburn. Swinging pendulums guide a pen, tracing delicate looping curves that slowly spiral inward as the motion decays.

Why it happens
Two or more damped pendulums move a pen and a table together, and their combined oscillations trace Lissajous-like curves that shrink as friction removes energy.

Image edit prompt“Redraw this image as a harmonograph drawing: dense, hair-thin looping pendulum curves in dark sepia ink on cream paper, spiraling and converging into the shapes of the subject, with fine overlapping Lissajous patterns and slight wobble. Keep the original subject and composition identifiable.”
