Petzval Swirl Bokeh
The fast Petzval portrait lens, designed by Joseph Petzval and produced by Voigtländer from 1840, gave sharp centers and twisting backgrounds. It became the signature lens of nineteenth-century portrait studios.

Spot it
- 01Swirling background blur
- 02Sharp central subject
- 03Soft vignetted edges
Why it happens
Strong off-axis astigmatism and coma in the lens stretch the out-of-focus highlights tangentially, which bends the background blur into a circular swirl around a sharp center.

Image edit prompt“Apply Petzval lens rendering to this image: keep the central subject crisp and detailed while the background is stretched into a strong swirling, rotating bokeh with creamy oval highlights, falling off into soft dark vignetted corners. Slightly glowing edges and vintage contrast. Keep the original subject and composition.”
