Salted Paper Print
One of the earliest paper photographs, created by William Henry Fox Talbot around 1839 and 1840. Plain writing paper is sensitized with salt and silver nitrate, giving matte, soft prints in warm reddish tones.

Why it happens
Silver chloride formed in the paper fibers darkens under light, and the metallic silver sits within the paper rather than on a coating, producing a matte, low-gloss image.
