Autochrome Lumière
The first commercially successful color photography process, patented by the Lumière brothers in 1903 and sold from 1907. Its glass plates have a soft, grainy, painterly look unlike any later film.

Why it happens
A glass plate is coated with microscopic dyed potato-starch grains acting as red, green and blue filters, then a panchromatic emulsion records the light passing through them.

Image edit prompt“Recolor this image as an Autochrome Lumière glass plate: fine pointillist grain of red, green and blue starch speckles, soft pastel color with muted reds and sage greens, gentle low contrast, a dreamy painterly glow, small dust specks and soft darkened edges. Keep the original subject and composition.”
