Zone System
A black-and-white exposure and development method that divides tones into eleven zones from black to white. Ansel Adams and Fred Archer formalized it around 1940 to previsualize and control the final print.

Spot it
- 01Rich full tonal range
- 02Detailed deep shadows
- 03Luminous, textured highlights
Why it happens
Meter readings are assigned to zones, then exposure and development are adjusted so shadows and highlights land on chosen print values and the scene fits the paper’s tonal range.
