Star Filter
A lens filter engraved with fine grooves that turns bright highlights into radiating star spikes. Photographers and filmmakers used it in 1960s and 1970s glamour shots, night scenes and music television.

Spot it
- 01Four to eight light spikes
- 02Glowing highlight points
- 03Soft dreamy bloom
Why it happens
Parallel grooves in the glass diffract bright light sources perpendicular to each groove, so every strong highlight spreads into a cross or star of streaks.

Image edit prompt“Shoot this image through a cross-screen star filter: every bright light, reflection and glint sprouts crisp six-point star streaks, with a faint soft glow around highlights, slightly lifted shadows and warm 1970s color. Subtle halation, no change to the dark areas. Keep the original subject and composition unchanged.”
