Rack Focus
A shot in which focus shifts from one subject to another within a single take, steering viewer attention. Cinematographers used it widely in classic cinema, and it became a staple of 1960s dramas and thrillers.

Spot it
- 01Foreground sharp, background blurred
- 02Smooth focal handoff
- 03Creamy round bokeh
Why it happens
Turning the lens focus ring changes the plane of sharpness; with a shallow depth of field, objects outside that plane blur into soft discs while the new subject sharpens.

Image-to-video prompt“Animate this image as a rack focus shot: begin with the foreground subject razor sharp and the background in creamy round bokeh, then over three seconds smoothly pull focus so the background becomes crisp and the foreground softens. Camera stays locked off, subtle natural film grain, shallow depth of field. Keep the original subject and composition.”
