Political Retouching
The 1930s practice of altering photographs by hand and in the darkroom to remove or reshape elements of a scene, notably in Soviet state publications. Today it is studied as an early example of image manipulation.

Spot it
- 01Airbrushed smooth backgrounds
- 02Faint paint-over patches
- 03Overly clean, flattened tones
Why it happens
Retouchers scraped negatives, painted with gouache or airbrush, and combined darkroom masks, so areas are smoothed and filled, leaving subtly inconsistent grain and tone at the edited boundaries.

Image edit prompt“Give this image the look of a 1930s hand-retouched press photograph: airbrushed and gouache-smoothed areas, faint brush-stroke patches in the background, slightly flattened tones, unnaturally clean surfaces, a glossy silver-gelatin print finish with subtle edge seams and pencil grease marks in the border. Keep the original subject and composition.”
