JPEG Compression Artifacts
Heavy lossy compression with the JPEG standard (1992) leaves blocky squares and ringing around edges. Repeated saving makes it worse, and the crunchy look is now used deliberately for meme and lo-fi aesthetics.

Spot it
- 018x8 pixel blocks
- 02Ringing halos on edges
- 03Muddy blotchy color
Why it happens
The image is cut into 8x8 blocks, transformed with a discrete cosine transform and coarsely quantized, which discards high-frequency detail and makes block borders visible.

Image edit prompt“Apply extreme JPEG compression artifacts to this image: visible 8x8 pixel blocks, noisy ringing halos around edges, blotchy banded color gradients, mosquito noise near contours, slightly muddy colors, as if re-saved dozens of times at lowest quality. Keep the original subject and composition.”
