Halftone
A printing technique that converts photographs into dots of varying size. In 1880, the New York Daily Graphic printed one of the first halftone news photographs, opening the way to illustrated mass-market newspapers and magazines.

Spot it
- 01Visible dot pattern
- 02Coarse screened grays
- 03Black ink on newsprint
Why it happens
A fine screen breaks tone into tiny dots, and larger dots absorb more ink in the shadows and smaller ones in highlights, so the eye blends them into continuous gray.

Image edit prompt“Convert this image into a vintage newspaper halftone: black ink dots on warm off-white newsprint, large dots in shadows, tiny dots in highlights, a coarse screen angled at 45 degrees, slight ink spread, uneven print impression and crisp contrast. Keep the original subject and composition.”
