Crystoleum
A Victorian craft of the 1880s in which a photograph was glued to glass, its paper rubbed away, and the translucent image painted from behind. The result glows like a miniature painting under glass.

Spot it
- 01Glowing hand-painted glass
- 02Rich glossy oil color
- 03Convex, jewel-like depth
Why it happens
The photograph's paper is removed, leaving a thin transparent silver layer, and oil paints applied to the back show through, producing luminous color under a glossy glass surface.
