Fumage
A Surrealist drawing method in which a candle’s smoke is deposited on paper or canvas to form soft, ghostly shapes. Wolfgang Paalen introduced it in 1937 as a way to let chance guide imagery.

Spot it
- 01Soft soot gradients
- 02Ghostly wisp shapes
- 03Charcoal-gray on pale ground
Why it happens
Carbon particles from an incomplete candle flame settle unevenly on the surface, building feathery tonal clouds that reflect air currents rather than deliberate brushwork.

Image edit prompt“Render this image as a fumage Surrealist smoke drawing: the scene built from candle soot on cream paper, soft feathery charcoal-gray clouds, ghostly wisps and halo-like gradients, accidental smudges, delicate dark-to-pale tones with no hard lines, and subtle paper grain and scorch marks at the edges. Keep the original subject and composition.”
