Flip Book
Patented in 1868 by John Barnes Linnett as the kineograph, the flip book is a stack of sequential drawings that animate when thumbed quickly. It became one of the simplest ways to show motion.

Spot it
- 01Stack of page edges
- 02Slight pose-by-pose jitter
- 03Thumb flipping corner
Why it happens
Each page shows a slightly changed drawing, and flipping them quickly presents the sequence in rapid succession so persistence of vision makes the changes read as motion.

Image-to-video prompt“Animate this image as a flip book: a hand-held stack of paper pages whose corner is thumbed quickly, each page showing a slightly different pose of the scene in simple ink-line style. Add slight jitter between frames, paper flutter and visible page edges. Fixed close camera, 4 seconds, warm desk light.”
