Portrait Vignette
A popular studio finish in the 1860s in which a portrait fades softly into the paper at the edges. Photographers used masks in printing or soft-edged openings to isolate the sitter's head and shoulders.

Spot it
- 01Oval fading edges
- 02Bright central subject
- 03Creamy empty paper border
Why it happens
A soft-edged mask held between the negative and the paper during printing restricts exposure at the borders, so the picture gradually fades into blank paper.

Image edit prompt“Print this image as a Victorian vignette portrait: the subject sits in a soft oval that gradually fades into plain cream paper, with warm albumen sepia tones, gentle glow around the center, delicate fine detail on the subject and no hard border. Keep the original subject and composition.”
