Zoetrope
A rotating drum with slits and a strip of sequential drawings, first conceived by William Horner in 1834 and made popular as the zoetrope in the 1860s. Viewers peered through the slits to see looping motion.

Why it happens
Slits in a spinning drum act as a shutter, showing each drawing for a brief moment, so the eye merges the sequence into a smooth repeating animation.

Image-to-video prompt“Animate this image as a zoetrope loop: the subject appears on a paper strip inside a spinning slotted drum, cycling through a short 12-pose walk or gesture. Flickering, stroboscopic motion seen through vertical slits, warm Victorian parlour light, slightly shaky drum rotation. Seamless 3-second loop, fixed camera.”
