Why it happens
Light-sensitive silver iodide on a polished silvered plate is developed with mercury vapor, forming microscopic amalgam particles that scatter light as highlights against a dark mirror background.

Image edit prompt“Render this image as a daguerreotype: a polished silver mirror plate with razor-sharp detail, cool silver-gray and slightly blue-brown tones, tarnished halo around the edges, faint rainbow oxidation, dust specks and a subtle mirror reflection. Mount it in a dark brass mat. Keep the original subject and composition.”
