Production breakdown · 2026
To the Moon and Back — 44 shots kept from 55 generated, built on a single rule: if a frame could not hold its own next to live-action, it did not make the cut.
Pre-production
The brief
Cinema energy was decided before any generation: practical light, long lenses, and a camera that behaves like somebody is carrying it.
The constraint that shaped the schedule was continuity — a sequence only reads as one piece once the subject stops drifting between shots.

Design
Locking the look
The reference set came first — subject, palette, and a light test — locked before anything moved. It cost less than two full runs and saved re-rolling every shot that would have drifted.

LightingBuild the reference set before generating anything final. It is the cheapest step and it decides whether the rest is usable.
Production
Shot construction
Stills carried the composition; motion only had to preserve it. That split kept the credit burn predictable.
Prompt structure
subject: who or what is in frame, one action only
camera: lens, height, movement
lighting: source, direction, quality
grade: stock or reference
negative: drone shot, orbit, lens flare, slow motionSpecificity was the lever — subject, lens, light, grade, in that order, every time.
Generating before the reference was locked cost more than any other decision here.
Highlight
The set piece
The strongest section is the one built as a continuous run rather than isolated pieces — each part picking up from the last so the geography holds and the joins stop being visible.
Restraint was the style. The shots that survived were the ones that did not try to impress.
Post
The cut
Cutting revealed which shots were working and which were merely pretty. Several of the expensive ones went.
Audio is the cheapest realism available. Footsteps and air under the picture sell it better than another render.
