Deep Focus
A cinematography style that keeps foreground, midground and background all sharp at once. Gregg Toland’s work on Citizen Kane in 1941 made it famous for layered staging and dramatic depth.

Spot it
- 01Everything razor sharp
- 02Layered foreground and background
- 03Strong depth cues
Why it happens
Small apertures, wide-angle lenses and very bright lighting extend depth of field, so objects at near and far distances all fall within acceptable focus.

Image edit prompt“Restyle this image as a 1940s deep-focus film frame: a large foreground element, midground subject and distant background all razor sharp, wide-angle perspective with exaggerated depth, dramatic black-and-white lighting, high contrast and ceilings visible overhead. Use staging that makes layers read clearly. Keep the original subject and composition.”
